Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel is considering “betting” on the fitness of Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante ahead of their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
Silva and Kante have missed Chelsea’s last two games – the 2-0 win over Tottenham in the first leg last Wednesday and the 5-1 FA Cup victory over Chesterfield on Saturday – after testing positive for COVID-19.
Tuchel, however, may risk including the duo in the crucial second leg although he appears to imply that they have yet to return to training after their isolation.
Asked if it would be too early to select Silva and Kante against Spurs, Tuchel replied on Tuesday: “I don’t actually know, I have to wait if they are in training this afternoon and then let’s see how they react to training.
“It’s a bet, if we do it, it’s a bet and I don’t know if we make it and what responsibility we can take there.
“But we have to do it step by step, I’m not even sure at the moment if they come to training.
“If they come to practice, we have to see the reaction and then decide.
“They’ve been released from solitary confinement, but they have to undergo heart tests and negative tests, and of course COVID tests. But there are also other protocols to follow before they can be brought back to training.”
