COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — For the second year in a row, Columbia fencing went 15-0 combined at the Western Invitational, hosted by the Air Force. The Lions faced five opponents on Saturday and finished with three rounds on Sunday before returning to New York.

“I’m proud of how we closed together as a team because everyone came to pick us up this weekend,” the head coach said. Michel Aufrichtig declared. “We fought back to many situations where we were down, winning several one-touch games. Everyone contributed to our undefeated weekend with smart fencing, positive energy and incredible teamwork.”

On Saturday, men and women posted nearly identical results. Columbia beat Incarnate Word, San Diego, Air Force, Stanford and Ohio State by combined scores of 183-72. Both teams started Sunday with convincing wins over North Carolina before the women got rid of Northwestern, 19-8. In the final round, the men and women both outscored the NJIT 24-3.

The Lions have next weekend off before hosting Stevens Tech., NJIT and Johns Hopkins at the Columbia Invitational on Friday, Nov. 18. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Blue Gym at the Dodge Physical Fitness Center.
