Going to the gym as a woman can be very… uncomfortable. Between men staring at you, standing behind you on leg day, and touching or kicking women off machines, the gym isn’t most women’s idea of safety. GirlGains is an on-campus fitness club focused on empowering all women and supporting them on their fitness journey. Launched by Tiyana Wong-Greene and Devyn Dyett in January 2022, GirlGains has created a space in the gym that is by women, for women. This club is open to anyone who identifies as female and welcomes beginner to expert level fitness enthusiasts. GirlGains is a positive space to try new things in the gym, push personal boundaries, and focus on the overall goal of gaining greater wellness.

“Whether you’ve been training for a long time or just want to start your fitness journey, our goal is to create a supportive group of girls to lean on and get motivated to be the best versions of ourselves,” said Tiyanah. .

The fitness journey can be hard to start on your own, so GirlGains runs classes for things like Bench Pressing and Squats with another club, Trojan Barbell Club. A buddy system is also available to all members, so no girl has to train alone. By teaching girls proper lifting techniques and encouraging them to try new things in an intimate setting, many people have felt less anxious in the gym while learning proper form. In addition, their boyfriend empowers them and allows them to start a gym family.

This fit family supports each other in more ways than one. Tiyana says, “Weightlifting not only improves physical and mental health, but also translates into achieving goals outside of the weight room. As the weightlifting space is typically male-dominated, GirlGains creates the space for women to feel empowered and unintimidated to begin their fitness journey!

At GirlGains, not all gatherings take place in the gym. GirlGains once held an event where over 25 women walked to the Hollywood sign. It was a time to bond and meet other women who enjoy exercising in a non-intimidating environment, as well as getting outside and off campus.

Plus, GirlGains hosted guest speakers giving presentations on everything from tips for starting your fitness journey to overcoming gym anxiety. GirlGains also hosted a free Pilates class with FratRowFitness. Their next event is a mobility course in partnership with Lululemon.

If you’re looking for a female empowerment community, this is the space for you!
