As the pandemic took hold, these businesses suffered damaging business disruptions. However, as more and more people now feel confident to return to the gym, they are rebuilding and working hard to help people get or stay in shape.

Here we take a look at some of these independent fitness centers and clubs in and around the area that are ready to help you improve your health and in a friendly environment.

Based in Newport, The Body Barn has grown from humble beginnings to a thriving gym environment.

“At The Body Barn, we’ve taken the concept of group training to the next level,” says owner Danny Robb. “We have transformed the essentials of a gym workout into a set of fresh and creative programs designed to meet all of your fitness goals. We offer different types of programs that run on a bi-weekly schedule. We also offer individual and small group PT packages, with in-depth data analysis, nutritional support and highly trained trainers to meet your needs and help you achieve your goals.”

Danny and the Body Barn team pride themselves on providing the personal touch, ensuring that all customers feel at home.

“We are creating a community environment here,” he said. “When you walk in here, you’re not just a swipe card – you feel valued. We believe that if people feel valued, they’ll come back.

“We are continually developing our programs and equipment and love our members to be involved and give us feedback to ensure we provide top quality service.”

The Body Barn also offers a tasting option for prospective members and tailors its memberships to customer habits and needs. “We offer a 7-day experience that you can try without paying,” Danny said. “If you like it, you can join on a monthly basis or on a flexible basis. We have a lot of student members and we can adjust your membership according to school periods and holidays etc.”

A non-profit organization that uses boxing to empower vulnerable people, Bright Star was started in 2016. In addition to a successful and popular boxing academy, Bright Star also operates as an alternative education delivery framework.

Club leader Joe Lockley said: “Our boxing academy, alternative education offering and community sessions work together to achieve our overall goal – to help every person achieve. With regard to our education offering alternative, we work with young people who struggle in mainstream school and help them overcome this difficulty, return to the path of education and show them that they can flourish.”

Apart from this, at Bright Star Boxing Academy, boxing is available for young and old, with sessions for 6-11 year olds, 11-16 year olds, 16+, and 50+. years and older.

“Our youngest member is six and our oldest is 76,” Joe said. “Everyone is welcome at Bright Star, whether you are an experienced boxer wanting to compete, or you are completely new to the sport and want to try it for the first time. Our ethos is ‘Believe, Belong, Become .Because we are Independent and local, we have this family atmosphere where everyone can “belong” and be supported. We like to help everyone who comes to us to “believe” in themselves, and through boxing, we help to “become” what they want.”

With an expansion just taking place, the future of Bright Star is indeed bright. “We just took a second unit next door so we can now accommodate a lot more members,” Joe added. “Our experienced and qualified boxing trainers run regular sessions 7 days a week.”

Bridgnorth Health and Fitness Club was established in 2004 and as such is one of the oldest gymnasiums in its area.

“We have a professional team that can help you regain your confidence and stick to your goals and aspirations,” said owner Bhutta Singh. “We have structured programs and will also offer support and guidance for healthy living. We can offer the latest machines and programs that will help you with your weight loss and weight gain goals.

For Mr. Singh and his team, giving club members the right level of attention and support is a priority.

“We’ve been here almost 20 years and we’re friendly and approachable,” he said. “Personal training at our gym is included in the cost of your membership. We do a consultation of approximately 45 minutes to an hour when you first join to determine your goals. Our business has experienced a good longevity and we believe in the personal touch.”
