A man was fatally shot in the parking lot behind an LA Fitness in northeast Philadelphia early Wednesday morning, police said.

Philadelphia police say they received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting behind the gymnasium in the 2500 block of Grant Avenue.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., responding officers found an unconscious man bleeding from his lower back. Police said they rushed him to a nearby hospital where he later died. He was 20 years old.

Within feet of the victim, investigators found a casing and a light intended for a firearm, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

Small said when police found the victim there was a man who appeared to be trying to help him. This person is questioned to see if they know anything about what happened.

It’s unclear why the two were behind LA Fitness, Small said.

Hours earlier, Philadelphia police responded to a deadly shooting in East Germantown.

A man was fatally shot two doors down from his home in the 900 block of Locust Street shortly after midnight, police said.

The officer rushed the 24-year-old to hospital after finding him on the sidewalk, but he did not survive, Small said.

Investigators said someone shot him multiple times from very close range. The police were still looking for this shooter.

As of Wednesday morning, there were at least 268 homicides in Philadelphia this year, down 6% from the same time last year, which was ultimately the deadliest on record in the city.
