BRONXVILLE, NY –Concluding the regular season Skyline Conference game, the New Jersey City University men’s volleyball team topped the tri-game hosted by Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday, April 2. Today’s wins marked exciting milestones for the Gothic Knights. Jersey City has officially clinched the second seed in the Skyline Tournament and is now set to host the semi-final on Thursday, April 7 at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center (JMAC) against Ramapo College. Another notable is that NJCU officially clinched its first 20-win season since 2009 after the first win of the day against Mount Saint Vincent College. The head coach Carlo Edra was a sophomore with the Gothic Knights when they set the 22-win mark in 2009. Finally, the victory over CMSV also marked the 100th victory of Edra’s coaching career.
Match #1: NJCU 3, Mont Saint Vincent 0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-13)
NJCU (21-8, 11-3 Skyline) started the day with a quick three-set victory over the Dolphins (5-12, 5-8 Skyline). The Vert et Or got off to a flying start, taking a 15-5 lead in the first set. Freshman outside hitter kills Anthony Trivers (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) and junior opposite Chris Castillo (North Bergen, NJ/High Tech) helped close the deal. The second set mirrored the first, as the Gothic Knights raced with momentum to finish 25-10. After trading a few points in the third set, NJCU edged past the Dolphins for the final set victory.
The senior outside hitting duo Jonathan Andrews (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) and passer Aaron Mantille (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) led the game with nine kills and 25 assists, respectively. Junior tri-captains James Bajor (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) and Brandon DaSilva (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) each collected six wins in the game. Andrews also landed a record five aces, followed by Mantilla with four and Trivers with two.
Highlights compared to CMSV:
– Mantilla finished with a record 25 assists, adding to his tally of 331 this season.
– Figueroa has recorded nine recoveries, just one of his career-high 10 in the previous game against CMSV on March 22.
– DaSilva had three high level blocks; Bajor and Castillo each had one.
-Jersey City took care of business by finishing with a .500 hit percentage, as opposed to the Dolphins’ -.085.
Game #2: NJCU 3, Sarah Lawrence 0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-21)
The Vert et Or continued their second game today against hosts Sarah Lawrence (8-14, 6-7 Skyline). DaSilva kills, rookie middle blocker Nate Aguilar (Kearny, NJ/Kearny)outside hitter Mahmoud Serour (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) and setter Leo Ferarri gave Jersey City the lead in the opening set. Bajor and Andrews added to the fun by securing the set 25-13. The Gothic Knights continued to maintain control in the second and third sets. Ferrari arrived with the Wii’s “super serve”, hitting the Gryphons with three straight aces to give NJCU a 5-0 lead in the final set. The Gothic team followed, stopping him with a final kill of the second in front Kenneth Gil (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen).
Andrews led with a record 15 eliminations, followed by Serour with seven and DaSilva with six. Breaking down the numbers, Ferrari fielded nine service aces in today’s contest, setting a career high. He also dished out 30 assists, adding to his total of 571 for the season.
