PEQUOT LAKES – Pequot Lakes Community Education offers the following upcoming courses. Register online at isd186.org under Community Education or call 218-568-9200.

  • Gym open: 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sundays, from October 2 to April 30, at the Pequot Lakes High School Athletic Center. Fees: $30 per person per season, $85 for a family of three or more in the same household or $3 for drop-ins.

Families and individuals of all ages are welcome to join the school’s open gymnasium. Participants 13 and under must be accompanied by a parent or registered guardian. Equipment includes floor hockey equipment, basketballs and dodgeballs.

No open gyms will be held on December 25, January 1 and 15, March 12 or April 2.

  • US intelligence agencies and their missions: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 6 at Pequot Lakes High School. Fee: $10.

Former CIA analyst Russ Strachan will present an in-depth look at various US intelligence agencies, their purpose, intelligence gathering process, security, and data on who is watching whom.

This informative presentation will share information regarding the nation’s intelligence community. There will be a time for questions and answers at the end of the presentation.

  • Minnesota mobsters: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 5 at Pequot Lakes High School. Fee: $10.

Historian and master storyteller Alan Bohme’s exciting and entertaining workshop will teach you about the gangsters who spent time at Breezy Point. Some known criminals in the area were Alvin Karpis, John Dillinger, The Barkers and Homer VanMeter.

This course will also cover the great Brainerd bank heist of the 1930s.
