LATHAM, NY – A dominating effort in doubles and wins in five of six singles matches helped the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s tennis team claim an 8-1 victory over Vassar College in the Liberty League action Sunday afternoon at the Tri-City Fitness Club. The 27th-ranked Engineers move to 8-2 on aggregate and 3-0 in the league, while the Brewers are now 5-6, 2-2 in the Liberty League.

Double action got things going as a senior RPI Eddie Wu and second Suhas Krishnan posted an 8-2 victory over senior Mihajlo Ivanovic and second Arun Guruswamy from three. The next flight was flight two in second year Max Safanov and rookie Igor Visnevsky narrowly defeated Brewers sophomores Benjamin Almquist and Jay Wong.

To complete the action, the first flight as an RPI rookie Aiden Drover-Mattinen and senior Peter Lorbach recorded a narrow 8-7 (9-7) win over senior Mathew Yee and rookie Arnav Agostinho.

In singles action, the Engineers made it 4-0 as Drover-Mattinen clinched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Wong in the first flight. Quatre saw Krishnan record a 6-2, 6-3 win over Agostinho to seal the match win.

Next was two as a rookie Emilio Van Cotthem posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Yee, while six saw a freshman Bryce Burnham picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over second Nihal Kothari. Five saw a battle between Lohrbach and Ivanovic. The first set was 6-4 for Lohrbach, while the second was a 6-4 win for the elder Brewers. Locked in a tie, Lohrbach sealed victory with a 6-3 win in the third set for the 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win.

The Brewers’ point came from three as Almquist took the win 6-4, 6-4 over Yohannes.

RPI returns to action next Saturday, traveling to Skidmore for a Liberty League game at 1 p.m. Vassar is also in action on Saturday, hosting Ithaca College (1 p.m.).
